⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Velvet Crowe
Age: 19
Canon: Tales of Beseria
Canon Point: Post-game

Background: Velvet | Berseria

Personality:

Once upon a time, Velvet was a perfectly normal teenager. She was cheerful, friendly, easy-going with only a tinge of sadness but those days are far behind her now. After the loss she suffered she was literally consumed by anger and despair to the point where she was physically changed. Then she spent the following three years allowing those feelings to fester inside of her as she was held prisoner. Those three years along with the loss have changed Velvet greatly and it isn't merely just a physical change. Gone is the lovely girl she used to be and in her place is someone who is completely different.

At the start of her journey, Velvet is a being who is full of anger and hate and it shows as she bowls through everyone who gets in her way or uses them to meet her goals. She does it without any remorse for the most part and doesn't stop to apologize or stop to see what consequences her actions have. In fact, sometimes Velvet will see the devastation left in her wake and then proceed to do it all over again. All of it is done with her own interest in mind and it's what carries her throughout the entire journey. At one point, Velvet's hate is pushed to the breaking point and she nearly snaps beneath it - aiming it at anyone who attempts to calm her but it isn't until Laphicet snaps back that Velvet is calmed. After that moment Velvet is not so easy to anger and has a handle on that part of it. It hasn't left her completely but she's no longer blinded by it to the point of being completely irrational. Things that had riled her up easily are now things she can take in strid, typically when she's dealing with her more irritating allies.

She is also an individual who speaks rather bluntly even if her words are going to hurt the person they're spoken to. While she's never really been someone who would lie to those around her, typically she would try to find a kinder and softer way to say it. That's no longer the case, except when it comes to talking to her allies. Velvet has no problem telling people the truth in a sharp and straightforward way that can sometimes be considered cruel and cold. However, when it comes to talking with those closest to her a bit of her old warm self shines through and she does attempt to not inflict unnecessary damage with her words. Either way, Velvet doesn't have trouble expressing her opinion on any matter to either friend or foe and that is something that will be obvious within a short time of starting up a conversation.

Despite her often speaking the cold truth or giving her honest opinion, Velvet is not exactly the sort who goes around talking about her own tragic past. She doesn't feel the need to justify her actions to anyone - especially not those who she just met. People aren't going to suddenly side with her just because she did suffer and now wants to make the individual responsible to pay. Velvet is allowing the world to see her as the villain in this story and doesn't bother trying to appear otherwise. Even when Eleanor joined the group, she didn't tell the exorcist anything until a long while later. She let the other teen believe that all of her actions were pure evil and didn't bother to correct any of the lies. Velvet is someone who doesn't need the pity of others, doesn't need them to know the truth of how her life was torn apart and so she doesn't share it. At least not easily. After some time has passed, she is more prone to talking about it with those she's closest to - bringing up both the good and bad parts of her past with her companions.

Velvet is an incredibly selfish creature and she admits to this on many occasions. Nearly everything she does is for herself and other people have constantly gotten wrapped up in her own interests because of it. Her selfishness is way more apparent at the beginning of her journey when she begins to collect allies and enemies alike with her single-minded goal of killing Artorius. Those who are kept close to her are nothing more than tools for a long while and if she doesn't have a use for them, she will either abandon them or kill them. After she starts to grow closer to the group, the selfishness is still there but she also allows herself to show them the more vulnerable sides of herself as well. Velvet asks them whether or not they want to leave and would let them walk away if that was what they wanted and not even hold it against them. In the end, she doesn't particularly seem to care whether the world is in shambles because of her actions just so long as she has her revenge. While Velvet is technically saving the world from becoming lifeless puppets, it's hardly her motivation for anything she does. Clearly she is not a typical protagonist even if she is one in a strange roundabout way. Luckily Velvet has a group of allies who mostly feel the same way.

Having trusted someone and then having that trust betrayed in the most horrible way, Velvet finds it difficult to trust in others. She has become an extremely cautious person and it takes a great deal for her to even start to consider trusting someone. It shows with nearly everyone she comes across as she constantly picks at them and their reason for staying near her. Of course it doesn't help when the people around her are also looking out for themselves and their way of life. They are essentially a group of bad guys who are only banded together for selfish reasons. While they do all have similar goals, Velvet is also aware that if her way conflicts with someone else's it won't end prettily. As for the rest of the world, most of them would consider her to be the Lord of Calamity and want her dead or merely want to use her. However, there is at least some level of trust between her and her allies, enough that they'd go face death together and trust the others to watch their backs. Velvet does trust them to handle their own mess on their own sometimes as well, that they'll do whatever it takes to follow through on their own interests. She has stood back on more than one occasion and watched as they tackled their own problems and kept others from interferring too. It's clear for the entire group that so long as their goals are the same then they can keep walking the same path, though none of them will hesitate to split at any given moment or even stand in the way. Their trust is built on the knowledge that they'll be true to themselves first and foremost, they all even encourage each other to be that way.

While Velvet might not be the softest and most caring being anymore, there are times when it does show through. It's done in small, subtle ways with maybe a little fond smile or even seemingly blunt words but to those who know her well enough realize when Velvet is doing it to be cruel or as an encouragement. Velvet does care for all of her companions at little bit, some she's more willing to show than others but it's just the sort of relationship she has with them. She may appear kinder to Laphicet while picking on Eleanor or brushing Magilou off but their relationships aren't exactly all that normal so Velvet can hardly treat them all the same way. While she's confident that all of them can fight their own battles - whether it be against an opponent or themselves, there may be a rare occasion when Velvet steps in to help them. She's far from being a hero that people deserve but Velvet is sort of attached to this ragtag group and doesn't mind helping them when they really need it. However, she is not so attached that she wouldn't cut through them if they stood in her way. Thankfully it hasn't come to that so Velvet doesn't have to regret going up against them.

Even if she doesn't care for a lot of people, she can certainly respect them. If she had wanted to, Velvet could have literally consumed anyone who was around her and probably wouldn't regret it too badly. In her mind there was only one important thing after she lost her brother and Velvet had no problem ending any conflict with violence. She could have used fear to make others do exactly what she wanted but instead has come to respect their ideals and beliefs to the point that Velvet works alongside them quite well such as Aifread's pirates or the Prince. They have earned her respect several times over and she has no problem working alongside them or getting along with them. Even the disreputable Bloodwings group has earned enough respect that Velvet didn't strike them down the instant they decided to use her like a mere tool. Velvet can also respect her fellow therions to some extent, easier with some than others. They too are individuals who had lost someone they love very much and the feelings Velvet has towards them are something she had to consider when thinking about her own goal. While she was fine with her own life ending, if she killed Innominat they too would die. It isn't necessarily the only thing that would stop her but it is definitely something she has considered at the very least.

For the most part Velvet is a rather calm person, not overly outgoing or easily excited. Given most situations she will think about what is the best way to approach a problem and realizes that she can't simply eat anyone that has a conflict with her solution. Sometimes she does need someone to lay it out in front of her such as when Eizen calls her out on pushing Eleanor too far. Then there are the times when others want to take a side trip and she needs to see that going along will get them closer to her end goal. Other times Velvet can see the practicality in aligning herself with people as working with them will help her out in the long run. So long as she thinks something will benefit her, Velvet can easily accept it as she won't hesitate to use any tool put in front of her. Honestly, she has a great deal of patience and it's needed when just dealing with her allies.

Even having said that there are times when she's absolutely reckless. Usually this occurs when her goal is within reach and her patience has worn out. Velvet will throw herself into danger, pushing herself and others beyond their limit on occasion without giving one single thought about the consequences of her actions. When going up against Artorius the very first time, she attempted to keep fighting even though she had a sword shoved into her abdomen. Even though Velvet was bleeding out she forced Laphicet to keep healing her so that she could keep fighting, so that she could kill Artorius. Then there was the time when awakening the four Empyreans could cause a volcanic explosion but Velvet had no plan to escape if that did happen. Not to mention all of the times the group has come up incredibly strong opponents and despite the logical choice to run away, Velvet has rarely retreated.

Before confronting Innominat she carried around a great deal of sorrow that was hardened into hate. She never had the proper opportunity to mourn the death of her brother and after seeing what really happened, Velvet fell into an even deeper despair. One that nearly crippled her to the point where she was willing to give up. If it weren't for Laphicet, she would have. It was his words that brought her back, that allowed her to finally accept her despair and let it go so that it could no longer be used against her. While she may still carry some sorrow, Velvet has started to heal and allowed herself to feel something towards other people rather than trying to deny it. After this experience, she does find herself acting differently towards at least a couple of her companions - namely Laphicet and Eleanor.

Over the events of her journey Velvet has become protective of Laphicet. At first she had merely just kidnapped him with the intention of using him against the Abbey but even near the start, she had worried about him. As they continue on and Laphicet becomes his own person, Velvet attempts to protect his innocence. On more than one occasion she has expressed her displeasure in what the others were attempting to teach him and put a stop to it. Also allowed an exorcist to become his vessel so that he didn't become a dragon even though Velvet didn't trust Eleanor even a little bit. She even protects the young malak from herself at times such as when she started to putting off too much malevolence and warned him to not get too close to her. Laphicet is also the one she happens to trust the most. When the boy decided to pit himself against Innominat alone, Velvet trusted him with the task while they dealt the a huge dragon. He's also the one who tends to see her when she's at her most vulnerable and even seems to understand her the best because he has seen her at her worst. They grow to have an extremely close bond and can say just about anything to the other.

There are times when Velvet could be considered the elder sister of the group - despite everything she has been through. It isn't just the relationship she has with Laphicet either, it comes in other forms as well. Typically when there's something amiss in the group she and Eizen are in the know together, discussing how to handle it. Rokurou is always offering her a drink and they can bond over both being daemons. Magilou is the annoying though lively one who irritates the group but can help lighten a mood while sometimes being insightful and they all pick on her and Bienfu. Eleanor is a naive exorcist who blindly followed the Abbey but is slowly seeing the truth of the world and when it seems like things might be too much for her to handle, Velvet tells her to blame it on the Lord of Calamity. All-in-all, they are an extremely weird group of people who have all seemed to have found a place together.

Velvet does have a very slight and dark sense of humor which she typically directs towards Magilou. She takes pleasure in seeing her suffer at least a little bit and often joins in when others are harassing the witch too. Of course, Magilou is not the only target just merely the most frequent. When the two of them attempted to take the stage, the witch tried to get Velvet to be her "straight-man" and told her to just be herself. She may not be a great comedian but she does say funny things on occasion and can find something amusing though it may be difficult to actually get her to laugh.

If there is something she truly enjoys doing it's cleaning and cooking. Actually, Velvet has such a particular way of cleaning that she won't let someone else do it because chances are they'll do it wrong by her standards so it's quicker to do it herself. She has a great deal of pride in successfully cleaning and feels so much better having accomplished the task. Give her a dirty room and she will set out to clean it without any complaints. She also enjoys cooking and always has. While the actual task of cooking is enjoyable, her favorite part is seeing the look on people's faces when they eat it. This is basically all she has left of it these days considering Velvet can no longer taste her own food but she often asks Laphicet to be her taste taster so the task itself isn't nearly as bad as it could have been.

At the end of her story, Velvet has changed a bit considering she killed the man that had taken her brother and her humanity away. A sense of peace and accomplish has settled in, allowing her to let go of of all of the hatred and vengeance she felt for Artorius. She no longer has a goal driving her forward towards her eventual destruction, thus allowing her the freedom to be able to just live for the first time in three years. What she'll do with this sense of freedom and peace in Empatheias is still to be determined but one thing is certain, Velvet won't have the sense of important urgency that propelled her to hate everything about the world.

Despite this seemingly nice conclusion to her life, she is still a daemon and is therefore ruled by a lot of her negative emotions so they haven't disappeared completely. However, it will mean that Velvet can simply enjoy her second chance at being among actual people and not simply spend her time dreaming of another life. This means that she'll be more prone to lending a helping hand when needed and participating in events simply for herself. Of course there will always be times when Velvet exhibits the selfish tendencies she always has but to a much less extreme. It also doesn't change what she's done in the past - both at home and in Empatheias. Velvet will never be the sort of individual who expects forgiveness from those she wronged, though she may be more likely to apologize to those she cares about.

A weight that she's been carrying around for years has finally lifted from her shoulders and it will be obvious for those who get close to her. The bitterness will be less visible as Velvet managed to resolve her troubles. Velvet has resigned herself to her fate of being part of an endless cycle and still cares little for her own well-being. However, what will always be more important are those she loves. She will fight to the death for them if that's what it takes or take up the mantle of a villian again if it's necessary.

All-in-all, Velvet is less angry and hateful after having returned home to finish her business. She will be much calmer and open to new experiences while still being everything that made her up until this point. Those who knew her prior will definitely notice that there's a lightness to the way she presents herself to others. That obsessive vengeance that was nearly her entire existence before is gone even if she will still go after her future goals with the same amount of determination.

Abilities:

Daemon/Therion/Hellion:

Velvet is a human who was infected with daemonblight (later known as malevolence) after the death of her brother. While she retains her human form she actually isn't human anymore, these days she's considered a daemon (called hellions later). Her entire left arm is capable of transforming into a giant red and black wicked looking thing with claws that exudes malevolence. Being a daemon grants Velvet extraordinary strength which she has used both in battle and on other random occasions when a rock needs shattering or pushing. She is a little more durable as well though not invulnerable but Velvet could survive a long drop with minimal damage and take a beating with the best of them. Especially if she should use her transformed left arm to accomplish various feats.

Her arm isn't the only thing odd about her either. She is one of the few daemons known as a therion and possesses the ability to consume other beings via her left arm - not just dameons but malak and humans as well. By devouring her opponents, Velvet absorbs their power and becomes stronger. When she absorbed her first malak, Seres, she also saw flashes of Seres' memories. It should also be noted that when Velvet devours a daemon, they are transformed back into their human form though they typically also tend to be dead at that point so... whoops. Because she's a daemon, Velvet actually can't feel cold so she could walk around in a blizzard wearing nothing at all if she so desired. It also has an effect on her tastebuds as well, she can eat all the human food she wants but the only thing she ever tastes is blood. Usually she gets around this problem by having Laphicet taste her food.

There is at least one thing she can't consume and that's those who use the armatus ability which is why it does later become a form the Shepherds use in order to battle future Lords of Calamity. She has also shown that if she does devour humans or malak their souls can remain inside of her for a time. Velvet has shown that she can communicate with these souls and sense whether they're still in her or not. With humans, she can also release them and did this to use four exorcists to revive the four Empyrean (malak/seraph "gods").

Note: Velvet does actually need to feed through her left arm in order to stay alive so she will be taking it from wherever she can. Aka any parts of the world where there are extreme negative emotions. She won't be feeding on those who are still human/animal/whatever unless they attempt to kill her first. Most likely she'll take to feeding on any creatures that spring up outside of Shaarnath considering they are made from negative emotions. Actually, Velvet and the world itself may benefit from her trying to live down on the surface rather than the floating island.

Lord of Calamity:

Honestly, this is merely a title that was given to Velvet because the Shepherd declared it so. With all the trouble that followed in her wake the talk of some vicious daemon spread throughout the land and the Shepherd declared it to be the work of the Lord of Calamity. At first Velvet sort of scoffed at this, not really giving the title much thought or concern and even joked about it in her own way. However, it is now a title that she does carry and throw around when necessary such as how she used it to not only make the people of an entire village flee in fear but to also draw out her enemy for her own purposes.

While she has done some things that have turned humans into daemons - sometimes on purpose - Velvet's end goal is not to kill the entire world like future Lord of Calamity try. She may have embraced her malevolence and daemon status to achieve her goals and acknowledges that it is selfish to the point that people's lives have been ruined but she is actually a strange sort of hero. Velvet has no problem using others as tools or hurting or harming them but she's only after the life of a couple of individuals. If that just so happens to save people by allowing them to keep their free will... well, then guess that makes her an unusual Lord of Calamity.

Note: It is important to note that she does radiate enough malevolence that malak/seraph should be careful around her as they are corrupted by the malevolence from other people. Velvet can't really control or contain the malvolence, if she's feeling more negative emotions than usual it comes off of her in larger amounts. While she won't let anyone purify her and turn her back into a human due to the fact that she can't really go back to the girl she used to be - not after everything she's done. She won't have much reason to go around corrupting others in Empath, though so this likely won't be a problem.

Battle:

Velvet is an individual who utilizes every aspect of her body in order to fight. When it comes to martial arts, she tends to stick to using her feet as they are stronger and have a longer reach than her arms. Although there is a hidden blade within the brace on her right arm that she can extend and use to strike at her enemies along with another one in her shoe as well. Then, of course, there's her left arm. Prior to becoming a daemon, Velvet did not have much use for it but these days she uses it just as much as her other limbs. Usually this involves allowing it to transform and simply strike out as if it were the arm of a beast. As is typical in a Tales of game, the characters have use of artes and Velvet is no exception.

Alignment: Elios

Love and hate have played important roles all throughout Velvet's life - love turning to hate and being part of the reason for her transformation from human to daemon. Hate fueled her journey to kill her brother-in-law, which she succeeded. Now at the end of her story, love has bigger place even while hate still exists within her. Velvet gave up her life, freedom and friends to seal away Innominat and lives in a dream world with her "family".

Other:
-Velvet can cook. She can eat regular food and does on occasion but is more likely to consume daemons.
-No matter how many daemons she eats, she's never full.
-Is allergic to cats.
-Somewhat knowledgable about flowers and various cooking tips.
